The Preparatory School for Chinese Students to Japan

The Preparatory School for Chinese Students to Japan is intended for students who are sent by the Chinese government to enter Japanese graduate schools (doctoral course). The students learn basic and specialized Japanese language necessary for study in graduate school. The school is located in the Jingyue Campus of Northeast Normal University in Changchun, Jilin Province.
After the Cultural Revolution ended in 1976, the Chinese government instituted the policy of “reform and open up”, and announced its intention of sending students to Japan in July 1978 as a part of the policy.
In response, in 1979, MEXT (Japan) started to send Basic Japanese language teachers mainly from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and specialized Japanese language teachers selected from high schools across the country.
The Direct method used in the Japanese Language School attached to TUFS was adopted for Japanese language education. At the beginning, there was skepticism towards the Direct Method in China. However, through the efforts of Japanese teachers, local Chinese teachers, administrative staff, and students who were selected from a large number of applicants, the initial preparatory school education through the method has been a great and legendary success, which everyone still remembers. The tradition continues today. Basic Japanese language teachers led by professors or associate professors from JLCTUFS, and specialized Japanese language teachers led by professors from the Tokyo Institute of Technology are being sent every year.
