JLCTUFS (Japanese Language Center for International Students, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) is an abbreviated name for the ‘Japanese Language Education Center for International Students, as a division of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
The forerunner of JLCTUFS was ‘The Japanese Language Branch School of the Department of Foreign Language of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies’, established in Sumiyoshi, Fuchu, Tokyo in April, 1970. At the same location, ‘The Educational Material Development Center for International Students, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies’ was additionally established in April, 1986. JLCTUFS, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010, is one of the largest Japanese language educational institutions, which seeks ‘a global basis in the studies of Japanese language education’ as a kind of grand design of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The seven story high building houses several substantial facilities, such as a hall which accommodates 100 people, large, medium and small classrooms with the most advanced AVC equipment, and laboratories. There are also solar panels on the roof to generate electricity. Please note that we at JLCTUFS do not accept private students like a private Japanese language school, and we do not offer special courses for international students. We only accept international students who are recipients of government scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (referred to hereinafter as: Monbukagakusho) and those from schools with whom TUFS has formed an exchange partnership.
